CHARACTER

CHARACTER NAME: His Nocturnal Magnificence, Sanderson Mansnoozie, Sandman the First, Lord High Protector of Sleep and Dreams (AKA Sandy)
SERIES:
Guardians of Childhood
CANON POINT:
Post movie
LOSS:
He will not be able to grant wishes. He spent much of his life in a shooting star granting wishes. Now that he's the Sandman on Earth he sends dreams, but each dream has the potential to grant a wish because all wishes start as dreams. He also still feels bound to grant wishes. Of all of his abilities this one would be the most difficult to maintain and keep from going out of control. After all, how many characters wish to go home? It would also make things very confusing. He would still feel bound to grant wishes but he will not be able to use his dreams to help that along.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER:

Sanderson Mansnoozie is the first Guardian. The Man in the Moon wished on a shooting star when he was a boy and Sandy granted that wish from the driver's seat. When Sandy's shooting star came under attack by the Nightmare King - AKA Pitch - he was barely able to break away and found himself plummeting to Earth. It was only thanks to a wish by the Man in the Moon that he survived. The next time he awoke was because of another wish by the Man in the Moon that he would protect the children of Earth when the moon was not full. Needless to say he accepted and was dubbed His Nocturnal Magnificence, Sanderson Mansnoozie, Sandman the First, Lord High Protector of Sleep and Dreams. Of course he's just fine with Sandy.

The first things anyone notices about Sandy are his height and his lack of speech. He is both the smallest and the quietest Guardian. Both come with some significant downsides, mostly that when the other Guardians are caught up in their own discussions they don't always notice when Sandy's trying to say something. This causes him to get, shall we say, creative in his attempts to get their attention. North's elves might not appreciate being shaken but it works, alright? His being mute is very important, however. He doesn't speak because if he were to make noise he might wake people up which would entirely defeat the purpose of what he's trying to do. This doesn't mean he can't communicate, of course. This just means he has to find other ways to do so. His primary method of communication is his dream sand. He uses it to form shapes and symbols above his head to convey his meaning. Unfortunately when he gets overexcited the symbols might move too fast and no one can understand him anyway but, hey, he tries.

What he does is extremely important to him. Each grain of his dream sand is one of his own dreams, stored away while he was sleeping after he plummeted to Earth. Even before he came to Earth, while he was in the shooting star, he loved dreams. Whenever a child wished on a shooting star he would send them a dream to help them achieve their wish. That's why he cares so much about these good dreams - they're all his. He uses them to help children chase away their fears of the dark and find their own dreams.

Sandy always has fun. Whether it's putting people to sleep or taking out the Nightmare King he loves what he does. He really is quite innocent at heart, almost to the point of appearing naive. When North is about to take all of them on the sleigh for the first time he grins and puts his arms in the air as if he were in a roller coaster, despite the fact that they're knowingly flying towards trouble. He's even smiling and waving at the kids as he knocks the sense out of Pitch. They say that if you don't love what you do it's not worth doing. He absolutely loves what he does, there's no question of that. He's also extremely competitive, right along with the rest of the Guardians, as evidenced when all of them volunteered to help Tooth collect teeth. Of course he works alone and doesn't really see many people unless they're asleep so he's also just happy for any opportunity to spend time with people.

As the oldest Guardian it stands to reason that he would be the wisest. That is certainly the case, even if he can't really express it very well. He doesn't get involved with arguments or fights unless it's to protect children. He stays out of all of the petty disagreements that go on around him, content to just stand and watch since he knows it'll work out right in the end. His wisdom is mostly visible in a few key places in the movie. When Jack and Bunny have their biggest falling out about the Guardianship Sandy is seen to tap North's leg, indicating to him that he should take their young friend aside and talk to him. He knew that the situation would only get worse if Jack continued to be surrounded by all the Guardians, elves and yetis. Of the Guardians the only one that might be able to talk enough sense into him would be North so it only made sense that North should take him aside. The other moment of great wisdom (and bravery) was when he was being overtaken by Pitch's nightmares. He knew his sand was being transformed into nightmares and there was nothing he could do about that. If he continued struggling and fearing for his life that would only give Pitch more strength. Instead he chose to close his eyes and relax, letting it happen. If the other Guardians were successful in their mission he would be back, anyway, and he wasn't about to give Pitch more power over them if he could help it. That was how he defeated Pitch when he first became a Guardian, after all. He took each nightmare and told it that it didn't exist and he wasn't afraid of it. when Jaime said the same thing to the nightmares and stood up to them that caused the catalyst that brought Sandy back.

On the subject of Pitch: Sandy is the one thing the boogyman is afraid of. No. Seriously. He defeated Pitch single handedly when he first became a Guardian. That's the reason why Pitch wanted him out of the way in the beginning - he knew he couldn't win if Sandy was around. Sandy is the boogyman's worst nightmare because he isn't afraid of him. Sandy has no fear because he is the Guardian of dreams and good dreams trump nightmares any day. He conquered his fear centuries ago when he destroyed the nightmare pirates and it never returned. It wouldn't be possible for him to give children good dreams if he were afraid of things, himself, after all.

Teddy Roosevelt said that one should speak softly and carry a big stick. Well he doesn't speak at all and he packs one heck of a whallop with those sand whips of his. He's usually a very zen dude, content to float in the clouds and put people to sleep at night. But if anyone or anything threatens the children of the world, the other Guardians or his dream sand?

Don't no one fuck with Tiny Sandman.

ABILITIES:
In addition to the power of flight Sandy has the ability to control his dream sand in many different ways. He's been seen to use it to form shapes to ride on, make sand snowballs to knock people out with and turn them into whips that can be used with deadly precision - though only on someone who truly deserves it. This is all, of course, in addition to the fact that his dream sand can put people to sleep and give them nothing but good dreams. He can put entire cities to sleep at one time, though he usually only does it when they should be sleeping. His sand doesn't just put them to sleep it also shows what the person is dreaming of in the form of sand shapes above their head. This could be both informative and very embarrassing.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:

Sandy smiled as he watched over the city. His feet sunk ever so slightly into the sand cloud he was standing on, giving him the perfect vantage point. It was time. He swept his arms out and the stand began to stir. It swirled around beneath him, tendrils slowly breaking away to reach out across the city. They all moved in beautiful harmony as they made their way to the surrounding buildings and the children within. He urged his sand cloud closer, peeking in the windows at the slumbering kids. A boy with a golden bat and ball dancing above his head. A girl with a ballerina doing pirouettes. Nothing but good dreams to bring smiles and good days upon awakening. He sighed happily, content to watch his sand do its work over the peaceful city. He waved a hand to direct one wayward tendril back on course when his eyes caught the light on the horizon. To anyone else it would look like the Northern Lights but he knew it meant trouble.

He cast a worried glance below him, knowing his work was far from over that night... but some things were more important. If the children of the world were in danger he had work to do and he had to get there fast. He gestured at the sand below his feet, shifting and moving it from the peaceful cloud into something more useful. It didn't take long for the plane to form, propeller already starting to spin as he settled into the seat. As an afterthought he formed some goggles for himself, thinking how clever he was to do so. He might not be able to see very well through them but he didn't need to see where he was going, after all. He knew his destination all too well and while he was looking forward to seeing his old friends he worried what might have caused North to call them all back. There was only one way to find out. He grabbed the joystick and directed his sand plane Northward.

FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE: [ 100 WORDS MINIMUM. In the first-person voice, write as if the character were making an entry in their journal, ideally using little to no action descriptors. It should be long enough to show that you have a grasp of the character's voice. OPTIONAL: If you prefer, you may link to sample threads in place of writing a 100 word sample. The replies from your character should equal or exceed 100 words. ] I

NTENT:
I adore the Guardians cast we have right now and am exited to join it. I also relish the challenge of playing a character that can only speak through symbols.
